You should have updated the bootloader before Installing the upgrade. use BDUtility to make a clover boot usb and use it to boot.

I also hve a problem when trying to update Niresh 10.15 to 10.15.6.
My current steps are as followed:
0. Made sure that Clover is up to date (and some kext like lilu etc)
1. Downloaded the 10.15.6 combo update (pkg or system update)
2. Installed the update in MacOS 10.15 and restarted the machine
3. In Clover bootloader selected the option for "Preboot"
4. After a few seconds, the machine reboots and it starts the default MacOS bootdrive from the clover bootloader
5. MacOS 10.15 boots without the update beeing applied

Edit: In step 3 it does not make a difference if i use clover via USB or SSD, the result is in both cases the same

Small update from my side:
I just cannot get it done from 10.15 to 10.15.6.
BUT i can update 10.15 > 10.15.1 and 10.15.1 > 10.15.2 (by installing the standalone update and not the supplemental or combo update) and launching the "Preboot" option twice from the clover bootloader

You need to update Clover Bootloader, Whatevergreen.kext and Lilu.kext.

When updating delete the default theme, found in themes folder.
